The future has arrived. Our pods marked as biodegradable take around 2 years to biodegrade – while other brands full of plastic and aluminium can take up to five-hundred years to fully decompose. We appreciate you taking the time to learn about the finer details of our product. Let’s satisfy your curiosity and break down how our biodegradable pods work in simple terms.
Our pods use d2w oxo-biodegradable plastic technology. Therefore, they’re recyclable and biodegradable (but cannot be composted). This means that they can be easily thrown in the recycling bin with your ordinary plastics. Or, for the lazy folk, be tossed into general waste – where they will break down at an accelerated rate of around 2 years.

 

The Technical Stuff

Normal plastic will eventually break into what’s referred to as ‘micro plastic’. This micro plastic can create serious problems for the environment, often remaining on land for decades, or worse, polluting our oceans. Unlike Express Pods, which will biodegrade in water, land, or on Mars (maybe).

Our oxo-biodegradable coffee pods evolve into material with a low molecule weight – creating a food source for natural organisms: bacteria and fungi. These organisms are known as ‘decomposers’, which importantly finish the decomposing process by releasing enzymes to break-down the compound. Isn’t nature amazing?!

Our Choice

Here at Express Pods, we’re using what we believe to be the most environmentally friendly product available. We decided on this material due to the lack of composting facilities here in Australia. Products made of compostable material can linger, releasing carbon-dioxide and methane: causing a greenhouse gas effect that would otherwise be captured by a composting facility. Therefore, tests of this material can be unreliable as they’re not subject to environmental conditions.

However, there is still ambivalence surrounding which method has the lesser effect on mother earth. Regardless of this, we all share a common passion – not just for great coffee, but also the well-being of our children and our children's children. We applaud any attempt to preserve the environment and that’s why we do what we do. Please know that we’re always on the hunt for new and improved ways to deliver ethically produced coffee fresh to you.

The Fine Print

We are supplied by a certified user of oxo-biodegradable (d2w) plastic technology, located in Italy. This technology abides by paras. 1 2 3 (a), (b), and (d) of Annex II inside European Parliament and Council Directive 94/62/EC (as amended) on packaging and waste in the European Union. This is due to the fact that Australia has no legality on biodegradable matters.

Accordingly, our pods comply with European Directive 94/62 EC for the procedures of packaging founded in article no. 13 of chapter 5 of Law 11/97 of 24 April for all packaging and residues. This is also the basis of test result ISO 14855 that revealed 82.3% biodegradability (CO2 evolution opposed to cellulose) in 670 days. On the basis of extrapolation, to full biodegradation (that is 91% CO2 evolution +9% Biomass) in 730 days.
